Default Mapped drive vs. usb drive

Question: I've seen the answer to this somewhere, but didn't find it when I searched on experts exchange just now ...

I have a remote drive mapped to e:. When I put in a usb drive, it gets assigned e:. I know there's a way to "reserve" e: so that Windows won't assign new drives to it, but don't remember how to do it. I think it involves a 3rd party utility of some sort ...
