Default Edit lmhost file in vista

We have merak mail running on our main server. We have some laptops that will be fed from a wireless router. At this time we use the ip of the mail server in the pop3 of the inside workstations and all is well. In XP PRO machines we include the mail ip and dns name in the lmhosts file, and then can use the mail servers name in the pop3 of the workstations.
Our challenge is to get a vista machine to connect to the e-mail inside the network. The vista home connects to a wireless router for internet access. We want to edit the lmhost file in Vista to identify the dns name of the mail server so the clients can access their e-mail from both inside and outside the lan. When we edit the lmhost file, we cannot save it as it is deemed a windows os fie. We are logged on as administator of the lap top. It is Vista Home Premium .
