Question Internet Explorer closes with the error message "The instruction at "0x66869b97" refe

For the last few weeks, an error message has been randomly appearing when I close Internet Explorer. It states: "The instruction at "0x66869b97" referenced memory at "0x00000018". The memory could not be "read". Can anyone tell me what this means, and how to solve it?

My system is a Dell Dimension 9100, 3.0 GHz, 4 GB RAM, Windows XP. I upgraded to Internet Explorer about a month ago.

In the case of your particular error message, the address that is out of bounds would be "0x00000018". A "buffer" is a dynamically allocated part of your memory where programs store temporary data that is usually read in from an outside source. The buffer is allocated in some fixed length, say 256 locations or bytes. If the data stored there exceeds the fixed length allocated, it will overwrite some other data or even perhaps program code and then cause some sort of error. In the article I linked to above, I cannot tell what data is being stored in this buffer because it doesn't give enough information. A "string" is a just a contiguous set of characters. Here are a couple of definitions of buffer and character string that may clarify matters:
