Default Compaq Desktop getting Internet Explorer error

Question: Compaq Presario 5000 running windows xp, 512 ram intel p4. Had to do a restore from the original software discs and that went fine. Did all the updates and then installed MS service pack 2 on the machine and now i having problems with internet explorer. I am getting ip addresses, can ping external sites (google, yahoo ect ... ) but yet when i go to browse the internet i am getting that page cannot be displayed. I did the netsh / reset log command and when i reboot i can get back online for a couple of pages. But, then i get the page cannot be displayed error again. Currently I am uninstalling service pack 2 to see if that was the main issue. I had going to comaq's website to see if there were any new drivers for the desktop but they do not offer anything helpful. I uninstalled / reinstalled the network card - that didnt help or make a difference. Did a chkdsk /r as well in case there were any issues there and it came up with nothing. Any suggestions ?

use hijackthis ( HijackThis Logfileauswertung ) short of that get ewido - anti-spyware and anti-malware solutions and update the defintions and then run a scan with that.

If that does not work then try iefix ( IEFix Utility - Description ) This is assuming that you are using IE 6 and not 7.

If you have IE 7 then I am not sure aside from that.
