Default Symantec Antivirus Resource & Disk Hog

The Symantec Antivirus on my machine is constantly running (which it should since it is realtime scanning), but at around 20% all the time. Additionally it access the disk constantly which makes my machine operate really slow. As far as I can tell the disk access is just scanning the used files, but at the same time it is generating huge logs. Looking at the logs however, they do not say that anything has been detected, merely that the scanning process is happening.

I think the biggest problem that I am having is the creation of the scanning logs. These are generated each day and are constantly increasing and get to a size of around 300-500 MB per day! Every few days I have to delete the log files since I run out of space on my C-drive. Additionally, these files are not doing my fragmentation any good. I have searched all the settings in the antivirus and I cannot find any information about what generates these logs or how they can be disabled. Any help on solving this would be greatly appreciated.

My system:
IBM Thinkpad T60, 2300 Dual Core 1.66GHz, 1GB RAM, XP Pro
Symantec Antivirus 10.1.4.4000

Default Re: Symantec Antivirus Resource & Disk Hog

From Symantec KB

In some cases, the Tamper Protection feature can cause this problem. To work around the problem, confirm that Tamper Protection is the cause, and then disable Tamper Protection.

To work around the problem

Start Windows Explorer.
Open the following folder:

\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Logs

Use Notepad to open one of the files in the Logs folder.
If you see several lines that refer to Tamper Protection, then disable Tamper Protection.
