My Boot Issue - It gets to the Windows XP screen and then restarts

I have in my hands a Sony Vaio PCG-9E6M which has XP home on it. THe problem is that it has decided to loop at startup.. as soon as it gets to the Windows XP splash screen priro to login it freezes for a few seconds and then reboots itself causing a infinite loop.

The problem I have is 1) the data on it is valuable and 2) the Sony recovery only seems to provide an image of the original system and no means to repare the current operating system.
