Default WMP54G wireless card with LINUX won't work

Question
I've been struggling with this one for about a week.
I've been trying to follow many suggestions, such as http://Linux-Sec.net/Wireless/Install-HOWTO/LinkSys.WMP54G/LinkSys.WMP54G.txt

-I have Mandrake Linux 10.0
-Kernal 2.6.3-7
-I've installed ndiswrapper 0.9
-I've installed pciutils2.1.11
Drivers: bcmwl5.sys and .ini

Everything seems to be going smooth.. but heres what I get:

[root@61 ndiswrapper-0.9pre3]# ndiswrapper -i /home/darrell/bcmwl5.inf
Installing bcmwl5
[root@61 ndiswrapper-0.9pre3]# ndiswrapper -i /home/darrell/bcmwl5.sys
Installing bcmwl5.sys
[root@61 ndiswrapper-0.9pre3]# ndiswrapper -l
Installed ndis drivers:
bcmwl5 hardware present
bcmwl5.sys hardware NOT present
[root@61 ndiswrapper-0.9pre3]# modprobe ndiswrapper
[root@61 ndiswrapper-0.9pre3]# ndiswrapper -l
Installed ndis drivers:
bcmwl5 hardware present
bcmwl5.sys hardware NOT present
[root@61 ndiswrapper-0.9pre3]#

when I use lspci | grep -i broadcom it finds it.
however the ndiswrapper -l sees the drivers, but not the hardware.

Any ideas? I'm hung up ont the hardware NOT present part.. I know it's there, it passed at boot, and the lspci sees it.
-it is properly seated.. (P4B motherboard w/ 1.6 G PIV, 1 G of RAM.. )

Ok, you do not install the .sys file, you just install the .inf and it will take the .sys from the same folder.

I'm surprised you were able to install the .sys file, it should have given an error of some kind.
Uninstall the .sys file and go from there. (You may need to blow away the entire config (/etc/ndiswrapper/bcmw15a I believe) and reinstall it, as I'm not sure the uninstall of a sys will work)

Incidentally, ndiswrapper 0.9 and 0.10 are reported to have problems on some cards when booting from battery. (No idea what the connection is). On my TrueMobile 1450 I had to downgrade to 0.7 (which various people have reported to work better) in order to prevent a complete system lockup when modprobing ndiswrapper. It didn't lock every time, but it was probably some 75% of the time I was on battery, so watch out for that.
