Question
I have four partitions on the disk: 19GB VFAT (Windows), 34GB Ext3 (empty), 2GB Ext3 (Linux/Ubuntu), 133 Mb Memory Swap.
I want to merge the two Ext3 partitions. How do I do this? There's nothing on the 34GB Ext3 partition, it's just empty.

If you're running it in Ubuntu, you won't be able to resize the root partition since you won't be able to unmount it. That's why a livecd is recommended.......Hmmm, now that I think of it, there's a GParted iso which would be ideal for your purposes
Like QTParted, GParted is a GUI wrapper for parted, but uses the gnome interface which uses the gtk toolkit instead of qt......It's a very small iso which will fit on a 3-1/2 inch cd or even a biz card......It's an excellent replacement for Partition Magic, and is a GPL'd freeware program.
Here's the page for the GParted livecd:
