Apple Seeks Developer Feedback on Leopard
The wait for Leopard will be ending soon, but while the clock is ticking away, Apple is gathering last minute information. In a rather unconventional move, Apple has started asking developers for feedback on the preview builds of Leopard, through an online
survey.
Leopard was delayed so that Apple could make sure that it was truly ready. With the deadline creeping closer, the company has turned to developers in order to see if they think it is. The company is asking that developers compare their Leopard build 9A499 experience with that of the current version of Tiger. Apple is not only looking at the overall experience, but also at that with specific types of applications and areas such as Mail & Web, Graphics & Media, Setup & Mobility, Desktop & Interface, Productivity & Communication, and Sharing & Devices.
Presumably, the company is trying to establish whether the latest pre-release is on par with the shipping version of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.
For each of the aforementioned categories, Apple is highlighted a half-dozen areas of user experience in Leopard and is asking developers to compare the experience on a scale that ranges from "Much worse" to "Much better."
It is rather surprising that Apple is doing this, considering that the developer community has been rather loud in voicing their opinions of the previous preview builds, especially in the areas of stability, performance and bugs. From the initial reports, the latest build fared no different.
While Leopard was originally scheduled to ship in spring 2007, the release was pushed back to October because key software engineering and QA resources had to be used for the iPhone, which runs a slimmer version of Leopard. Considering the current schedule, the company doesn’t have more than a few weeks before the software needs to enter the manufacturing cycle or face being delayed again.
