Default iPhone vs Motorazr for physician

Question: OK, so this may be too general of a question. But, I am just looking for some opinions to head me in the right direction.

My Nokia cell phone is definitely outdated, and I am looking to upgrade to something more modern and more functional. Living in Bangor, Maine means that technology has taken quite a long time to get here, but I think wireless access to email and Internet is available via AT&T, etc. My current phone can only make calls and text.

I am a physician so I would like to have more options for communication and maybe even give up my pager and the $200 per monthly fee which comes with it. My friend uses Virtual PBX | The Onebox Receptionist Virtual Phone System and his cell phone to cover all his after hours patient calls. I don't need the onboard camera, although I don't think it is even possible to get a high end phone nowadays without one. Which phone would be more compatible with these needs. Is it easy to use the iPhone as a phone compared with the design of the Motorola phone? I wish there were ways to try them out first.

The telephones I was looking at are the Motorola Razrs and the iPhones.

I am a bit hesitant to go with the iPhone, because it seems to cater more to a young niche market, but still when I go to its site, it seems very intuitive and capable of doing quite a lot.

Money isn't really a factor. Again, I am just looking for information and opinions. There are no really right and wrong answers here, and the distribution of points will most likely reflect that.

I can't speak about the iPhone with any personal experience. What I can say is that the issues you should look at are which wireless network you want to be on, what coverage those networks provide in your area, etc. Personally, I've had the best success with Verizon - I even had partial coverage on Vinalhaven, with the closest tower being back on the mainland.

I also encourage you to think about the impact of choosing the newest technology for something that _just has to work_, given your profession. I am on a FEMA US&R team, and have found that Motorola makes some rock-solid phones which work and transmit when nothing else does, and hold a charge longer in adverse conditions. Again, something to consider. Having said that, the Razr is not a high-tech phone like the iPhone, it is not really going to give you the options you have with a internet device like Apple's iPhone.
