Windows XP HOME. With Service pack 2
Fault message is:Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. yoy may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.
This issue appears to be associated with windows updates from MS web update. All desktop icons are affected and no programs can open.

Have you recently updated any anti-virus, Malware utility, or any other application ?
What were the last MS update(s) you installed please (Firstedition0 has already requested this), we could then check it further?
