Default Microsoft Word slow to open and close

I am running an XP environment on a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop (about 2 years old) with 512mb of RAM and have Office 2000 installed. There is 136 Gb of free disk space out of a possible 146 Gb. I use AVG anti-virus software.
As of a week ago using Word started slowing up dramatically as indicated below.
When I start up WORD it can take up to 2 minutes to open or close a new or existing document. Additionally at startup an old partially completed doc appears instead of a blank template as document1.doc
I store all of my Word documents in My Documents.

All other applications including Microsoft Apps (Excel etc) run as I would expect them

Actions to date :-
Defragged disk
Uninstalled AVG and re-installed with Word plug-in disabled - I did this because I saw virus scan appear in the status bar every time I opened up Word and thought that might be having an impact.
Uninstalled Office 2000 and installed Office 2003 twice.
I also renamed Normal.dot as normal.old.
The above actions were suggestions from various from other forums.
After all of the above Word is still painfully slow to open and the partially completed doc still appears instead of a blank doc at startup.
Any suggestions?

You say you renamed normal.dot but there may be several on your hard drive. It sounds like your normal.dot was resaved with information... so that may be the problem.... or at least one problem. Search for all instances of normal.dot and rename or delete. Also, make sure all windows and office updates have been installed.
