I am in the process of understanding Exchange 2003 and it's features. My question is: which tool or method is the best way to move a current Exchange 2003 mailboxes from old hardware (server) to new hardware (server) w/Exchange 2003 installed? Here is the background to the environment that I am working with- 2003 native environment. The current Exchange 2003 is running good but has old hardware. I recently built up a new server and ran DC Promo, installed the Asp.net, IIS, WWW, SMTP, NNTP, and by default has the Net Framework. I know I will need to start up those services. I am also running Exchange Best Practices Analyzer Tool.

I am throwing out my thoughts here: Will I need to run adprep \forest and Domain? Will I need to run Exmerge or is there an easier way to move the mailboxes over?

If your domain has exchange 2003 already then all you need is to install exhange on the second (new) server... then from active directory users and computers move the mailboxes from the old server to the new one by right click the user account choose "exchange task" and choose to move the mailbox.

When all mailboxes have been removed, check the following link to shut down the "old" server.

Exchange can run on a domain controller but this is not a good solution.
