Specific mailboxes cannot set the out of office assistant. This is the knowledge base closest to our issue.

Outlook command line switches also do not seem to have an effect. Recretaing a new profile doesn't work. Tried bluffing it with another profile to an administrative account and still no luck.

Has anybody else found a work-around?

Error message when you try to modify your out of office settings in Outlook 2003: â€œERROR Your AutoReply message could not be displayed. The client operation failed.â€œ

I asked about Symantec because I've read some reports of it causing this problem. Have a look at this Symantec article:
