Just a General Compatibility Question for Vista

I do quite a bit of webdesign, school work, and video gaming on my laptop(inspiron 9300) and i am interested in trying out vista. i have all the specs required but the only thing i am hesitant on is the uncertainty of its compatibility with software from previous versions of windows, ie windows xp. i think it would be common knowledge, or a fair assumption to think so but i cant afford to bargain on an assumptions. Can someone shed some light on this topic. all comments are greatly appreciated.

compability with old software (xp, 98, et.c... ) working but dont much hehehe

games, sound onboard, devices, etc.... better to see in

nearly all software is just working fine, it's more likely that drivers do not work.
