"The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted" error message

Question: When I try to log on to the domain controller, it takes 10-15 minutes while at the Preparing Network Connections. Then once I can log in, and I try to open Active Directory I get the error "Naming information cannot be located because: The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted."

So I searched the Microsoft KB and found ID # 834859. I called microsoft and got the hotfix, and ran the .exe and it says "Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying. There is no need to install this update."

What do I do?

You need to restore the System State...

If you have a backup of SystemState before you started getting this problem then you need to restore that otherwise you can run DCPROMO and make the server a member then re-run DCPROMO to reinstall AD (Assuming you have more than one Server)

Also check the free disk space on the drive holding the active directory database
