group policy 1054 error on xp

I have a MS virtual server that i have a 2003 VHD downloaded from ms , this is a virtual hard drive that has a somewhat preconfigued 2003 server , i have instlalled AD and setup dns as usuall , I have a manually instlaled XP client also running on the same virtual server and joined to the domain , ia m gettign the error " windows cannot obtain the domian controller name for your computer network ( the specified domain controller does not exist ) error 1054. I have tried this with a laptp that is not on the same virtual server also with the same results , none of the group policy setting are installed on the clients

It's all about DNS.

You Virtual guest server is likely getting an IP from the real DHCP server that the Host is using.

You'll need to configure the virtual NICs so that the 2 guest OSes are private or at the very least the XP guest points only to the 2003 guest for DNS and DNS is set on the guest server to point to itself then Forward to the real DNS server on the LAN.
