Default Switching from 2000 domain to 2003 domain with the same name

We have a Windows 2000 domain with XP and 2000 clients. I configured a 2003 domain controller from scratch and added the user and computer accounts to match the 2000 domain and am using the same domain name.

I took a workstation that was origninally on the 2000 domain and put it on my test subnet with my 2003 server and thought I could maybe log on as is since the 2003 domain is using the same domain name as the 2000. In other words I didnt join it to the 2003 domain but tried to log on as is.

My question is why didnt it work? What prevents the workstation from logging on to the 2003 domain without any configuration change since its the same domain name as the 2000? I dont want to upgrade the 2000 domain because we are using Advanced Server and you cant upgrade to 2003 Standard but only 2003 Enterprise. Plus the 2000 was upgraded from NT and its kind of shakey so I want to start fresh.

It won't work because the server doesn't care what you name the domain... it only cares about the SID assigned to the workstation and to the domain. As far as it's concerned, the workstation is from a foreign domain and it doesn't know what it is. The workstation will not get a token to authenticate. You will have to disjoin and rejoin the computer to the new domain to make it work.
