Hey, I've decided to write this tutorial for the x64 editions out to date. It's in step by step format for now so please bare with it. 1. Just a note, before you even format for x64, or partition even, you should put all your needed x64 drivers on either a flash drive (including MP3 players that act as hard drives and flash cards.) , a CD-R, or another hard drive as they may be needed before you can access the internet. Failure to do so may cause a big hassle. 2. Okay, first access your control panel via your Start Menu or your My Computer toolbar links. Then open your System Control panel and navigate to advanced. Click "settings" under the performance heading. Move over to the Advanced category and click change at the bottom of your screen. This is your virtual memory settings. For optimal performance, change your page file to between 2.5 times and 5 times your physical RAM size. 3. Next go back to your System Properties page and navigate to "Remote". Uncheck the "Allow Remote Assistance invitiations to be sent from this computer" option. This could help in preventing hackers from using your computer via a trojan horse program. 4. Now, navigate to your "Internet Options" menu via your Contol Panel. These options we are changing are for maximum security and privacy. First go down to the "History" heading and set the "Days to keep pages in history" value to zero. Next click on "settings under the "Temporary Internet Files" heading and Change the value of "Amount of disk space to use" to a number less than 50 MB. Next Navigate to the "security" tab and click "Default Level" which is actually a pretty safe level for most users. After that click on "Privacy" and change the Sliding bar setting to "Medium High" , a safe cookies level to prevent most tracking cookies. Lastly move over to the "advanced" column and do the following: a) Uncheck the "Automatically check for Internet Explorer Updates" option which could actually allow someone to connect to your computer through that port at certain times. b ) Uncheck the "Enable Install On Demand" Options, (One for "Other", one for "Internet Explorer") which could allow unlawful programs to be installed due to Windows faults. c) Uncheck the "Enable 3rd Party Browser Extentions" option, as it will help to keep spyware filled toolbars from executing on your computer. d) Check the "Empty Temporary Internet Files Folder When Browser Is Closed" option to prevent temp files from building up. e) Lastly uncheck the "Enable Integrated Windows Authentication" box (to prevent anyone from connecting to this port unlawfully or spreading malicious code through it. Then click "Apply". 5. Next you might want to clear up and fix anything that the windows installation has left behind. Navigate to: Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System tools and execute both "Disk Cleanup" and "Disk Defragmenter", making sure to clean all drives/partitions on your machine. 6. Now we get to the video card driver part of the optimization guide. Go to your Video Card vendor's website (Probably either www.nvidia.com or www.ati.com , as those are the most widespread vendors) and download the latest x64 (64-Bit) compatible drivers. Install them through the Intallation wizard and restart the computer. 7. Secondly we get to the Chipset Drivers. Consult your user manual and go to the website provided. Download and install the drivers using the Installation wizard and restart again. 8. Next we get to the last main hardware driver download. Consult you r Soundcard manual and go to the vendor's site (Probably www.Creative.com) and download the driver according to the model number and name on the manual. Install those drivers with the Installation wizard and restart yet again. 9. Lastly download any more driver for any other hardware that you have and install them in the same method. Another good download site is our very own www.PlanetAMD64.com's ODD Or Download section as it is now called. 10. Install all your programs and games and then if possible re-defragment your hard drive. Just a note. When deciding to use a browser for Surfin' the net, it would be best to use either 64 Bit Internet Explorer or Firefox, as they're more secure than 32-bit Internet Explorer. Thats all for now but This is only a start, this guide WILL be updated. Anything to be added email it to november_scorpio_666@hotmail.com or send it via PM to me on here. Thanks! |
