I recently bought a PC package from a large retailer in the UK, PC World.. Having used it, it would appear, imo, that they have been conned by their suppliers, COMPAQ etc, into supplying underspec'ed machines running Vista? There is no longer an XP option. The chip was a good one, AMD +3800, but the memory was only 1/2 a gig, and this turned out to rate a low 2.0 on Vista's own Exprience scale! After getting no satisfaction regarding my claims that I had been sold a machine that was out performed by an old 800 mhz box running ME that it was meant to replace, I reluctantly added 2 gig of extra memory at my own cost. I assumed this would make Vista fly.. Some hope! It is definitely better but not up to scratch, imo...

However, even on the old configuration, Remote Destop was very usable. Adding the extra memory has made it totally unusable!!! It takes twice as long to get to the remote machine; when typing, text does not show up on screen for 10-20 seconds, clicking on any action items gives a similar delay, and it is just a nightmare compared to what it was before. It is beyond my powers of logic as to how adding 4 times the memory can make any functionality 4 times worse, but it has done that to Remot Desktop?! Any Help would be most appreciated!

Yes, removing the single 512mb module should cause the system to switch to dual channel mode (I would definitely do that).

It's certainly perplexing why your system runs SLOWER with the increased memory ... do you get the same result if you remove that 512mb module??

... and Yes, I'd think it would run quite nicely with XP.
