Vista IE7 not talking to SBS RWW

Server SBS2k3. Clients a mixture of XPSP2/Vista Business. Clients are not joined to the domain as they're all laptops and never join the local LAN. Am attempting to get the Vista/Outlook07/IE7 machines to talk to RWW, as a first step to setting up exchange. At present my XP/IE6 machines work fine, but I can't make any kind of connection from the Vista machines. A url of https://sbs1.mydomain.com/remote will just leave IE7 attempting to connect indefinitely. No challenge for authentication, no warning of invalid certificate, nada. If I change to use the server's IP address instead, same thing. I have a rapidssl certificate installed on the server in the name of sbs1.mydomain.com as I've read that self-certificates can cause/exacerbate problems. I've tried adding the server into trusted sites and switching off protected mode in IE7 but it doesnt seem to be helping. What am I missing?
