Default IPv4 setup Verses TCP/IP?

I have a Sony VAIO Notebook, with Windows Vista Ultimate OS. I am trying to setup local network which has i iIP protocol IPV4 and IPV6. I 've made changes to IIPv4 properties defining a static ip address, and I am trying establish connection using ethernet. When I check connection status, it says it's connected. However, I am not able to connect to Internet or see my other computers on my home network. IPv4 is new to me. Is there a difference in the IPv4 setup verses TCP/IP?

IPv4 is the "old" version of IP that we have all been using since 198?. IPv6 is the "new kid on the block". IP is the IP bit of TCP/IP so both IPv4 and IPv6 are part of TCP/IP.

If the rest of your network uses IPv4 then this needs to be set up correctly in order that you can communictate properly.

You need to ensure that the IP address and subnet mask are valid for your network. You calos need to set the Default Gateway and preferred DNS server is you want to communicate with the outside world.

If this is a home network without a domain controller then the default gateway should be set to point to your router, the preferred DNS server (depending on your ISP and setup) may either be the router as well, or could be the IP address od your ISPs DNS server. Your documentation should tell you which to use.
