How to Run Disk Defragmenter from the Command Prompt : INFO: This is the same as the Disk Defragmenter inside of Vista, but from the command prompt with more details. NOTE: For how to run Disk Defragmenter from within Vista, see this link: (Disk Defragmenter)http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/72832-disk-defragmenter.html Here's how: NOTE: Wait until your hard drive stops running before closing the command prompt to allow the defragmentation to finish. 1. Open Start Menu. 2. In white line (Start Search) area, type cmd. 3. Right click cmd (at top) and click Run as administrator. 4. Choose the option below you want to do below. For a Complete List of Commands : 5. In command prompt, type defrag.exe -? and press Enter. (See screenshot below) ![]() To Defragment a Drive or Volume : 5. In command prompt, type: (See screenshot below) A) defrag.exe c: and for the C: drive NOTE: You can use whatever drive letter to defrag it. OR B) defrag.exe -c for all drives or volumes. C) Press Enter. ![]() To Perform an Analysis only and not Defragment : 5. In command prompt, type: (See screenshot below) A) defrag.exe c: -a for an analysis on the C: drive NOTE: You can use whatever drive letter to defrag it. OR B) defrag.exe c: -w -f for the C: drive with full defragmentation. OR C) defrag.exe c: -r -f for the C: drive with partial defragmentation. OR D) defrag.exe -c -f for all drives and volumes. OR E) defrag.exe -c -w -f for all drives with full defragmentation. OR F) defrag.exe -c- r -f for all drives with partial defragmentation. G) Press Enter. For Verbose or Detailed Mode : 5. In command prompt type: (See screenshot below) A) defrag.exe c: -f -v for the C: drive. OR B) defrag.exe c: -a -v for the C: drive with analysis. OR C) defrag.exe c: -w -f -v for the C: drive with full defragmentation. OR D) defrag.exe c: -r -f -v for the C: drive with partial defragmentation.
