How to Change the Open Folder Icon

INFO: This will change all the open folder icons to a different icon when you open the folder in a folder tree in Vista. It makes it easier to navigate when the open folder icon is different than all the other folder icons. NOTE: You must be in a Administrator account or apply Administrator privileges (Run as administrator) for this to work. BEFORE -------------------- AFTER Through a Download : 1. Click on Open Icon.reg below to download. 2. Save Open Icon .reg to your desktop. Open Folder.reg < Click to Download 3. Right click Open Icon.reg (On desktop) and click Merge. 4. Click Run button for Security Warning prompt. 5. Click Continue button for UAC prompt. 6. Click YES on Confirmation prompt. 7. Click Ok for Success prompt. 8. Confirm open folder icon has changed and delete Open Icon.reg (On desktop) Through the Manual Way : 1. Open Start Menu. 2. In white line (Start Search) area, type regedit and press Enter. 3. Click Continue for UAC prompt. 4. In regedit, go to: (See screenshot below) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\explorer 5. In left pane, right click explorer and click New and click Key. 6. Type Shell Icons and press Enter. (See screenshot below) 7. In right pane of Shell Icons, right click on a empty area and click New and click String Value. (See screenshot below) 8. Type 4 and press Enter. (See screenshot below) 9. In right pane, right click 4 and click Modify. (See screenshot below) 10. Type or Copy and Paste: C:\windows\system32\Shell32.dll,137 (See screenshot below) NOTE: If you want to use a icon of your own, then type in the full path of where you saved the icon instead. 11. Click Ok. 12. The registry will now look like this. 13. Close regedit. 14. Restart computer or Explorer to apply changes.
