After denying that any major Vista updates would be released before Service Pack 1 ships, Microsoft released “Vista fix packs” to testers yesterday.
The
fix packs were released to Windows Server 2008 testers. Among other things, the packs are supposed to fix performance and reliability issues in Vista and Server 2008. There will probably be two packs (or three), one for Vista 32-bit, one for Vista 64-bit and one for Windows Server 2008 but little, if any modifications will be needed.
Specific improvements include speeding up Vista’s hibernate, sleep and resume performance as well as improving the oft complained about file copying and transfer issues as well as enhancing memory management.
Microsoft can’t afford to wait until 2009 to ship the final version of Vista SP1 as plans to release Windows 7 in 2010 have been confirmed. There would be no point in releasing the service pack so late.
A private beta of Vista SP1 is still expected soon and as far as I can tell, Vista SP1 will ship in final form before the end of the year.
To think in only three more years, we’ll all have to buy a new operating system, doesn’t that sound exciting?
