Default Compaq Presario DVD/RW quit working

I am working on a Compaq Presario C504US with 32 Bit Vista Home Basic.

The owner tried to install an "Air Card" and basically screwed up all of the drivers and managed to lock up about half the services that are supposed to be running.

I have everything back to normal - except that the DVD/RW (Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530 ATA Device) will not recognize DVD's or CD's.

I have 'uninstalled' it and reinstalled it in Device manager - also did the same for the Sound, Video, and Game Controllers (recommended by HP/Compaq).

In Event Viewer, I am getting the following repeatedly:
Log name: System,
Source: CD Rom,
Event ID: 7,
Level: Error
User: n/a

"The device, \Device\CDRom0, has a bad block"

This customer is visiting from out of town, so time is of the essence.

I have to give it back to him in a few minutes, but if we can come up with something concrete, he will give it back to me tomorrow.

Any thoughts will be appreciated and those who know me, know that I close questions quick (and well).

Thanks a lot.

Well, off the cuff, usually that message pops up in a surface scan of a disk. Ie a bad cluster. Are you using the same cd each time as a test? Have you cleaned the optical drive with a cleaning disk. Do you have another optical drive you can swap in? That error message sure sounds like hardware to me.
