When I boot in normal mode I get a window that pops up and says "bad image logonui.exe" The in the box there is with a very very long path pointing to the c::\windows\winsxs folder and eventually comctl32.dll After a long period with a black screen I get another message like above. After a few of those it switches over to :bad image logon.scr" with a very long path pointing to c:windows\ winsxs\.......\comctl32.dll I ran repair startup and got the command prompt box to open where I ran chkdsk. I was unable to run sfc /scannow there for keeps saying that I have a repair pending and must complete and reboot. Unfortunately the admin account is not active so I am logging on as a regular user in the repair startup. From command prompt I can see the C: drive and recovery partition d:. If I put a usb flash drive in I also see it as drive f:. Is it possible for me to get fresh copies of logonui.exe and logon.scr, put them on the flash drive and then move them to c:\windows\system32 folder? If so where can I get these two files plus any others I might need. Finally since the actua logonui.exe is in the windows\system32 folder why is this error point to a folder and path in c:]windows\winsxs. I have also booted into safe mode and basically got the same thing. Also trying to use restore point and last know good configuration did not resolve it either. If you need any more info, please let me know, as it will take me days to recover from this if I have to reinstall everything from scratch again. |

Since your restore CD is going to wipe out everything you have a couple of options. 1) Take the drive out and mount it in another machine - copy your data off. 2) Buy a copy of a higher version of Vista and boot from the CD then upgrade it. Ultimate upgrade might do it. 3) Wipe and load - restore it from your restore CDs. |
