All 3 computers work perfectly fine in getting on the internet. And, after installing the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder patch on both XP computers, I can "see" all three computers on the Vista desktop pc in the full map view of the Network and Sharing Center. I can also ping both machines successfully from Vista. However, neither XP machine "sees" the Vista machine or ANY others, including themselves, in My Network Places. And both XP machines time out when I try to ping the IP of the Vista machine (pings to the router work fine.) When I click View workgroup computers in My Network Places of my XP laptop, for instance, I get the message: "Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the Administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available. (OK)" I have also added the administrator of the Vista machine (LeeTutor) to the administrative users of the XP laptop, and added the administrator of the XP laptop (LeeTutor2) to the administrative users of the Vista machine. Both have passwords. It is the same workgroup, named WORKGROUP (as that is the standard name in Vista.) In Network and Sharing Center of the Vista machine, these are the details: - Network discovery on - File sharing on - Public folder sharing on - Printer sharing on - Password protected sharing on - Media sharing off It is a private network. I THINK I have set the firewalls correctly. The Vista firewall is turned off, but I am using the Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security Suite 14 instead, and on the XP laptop the XP firewall is turned off, but I am using the free ZoneAlarm firewall instead. On the ZoneAlarm, the IP of the Vista machine is set as trusted. What else needs to be done? |
