When Vista boots up, it goes to the green loading bar, then the screen goes black and the mouse pointer loads and then nothing. Just sits there, although the mouse still moves. Now if I restart and hit f8 and choose disable driver signing enforcement vista will boot although some windows features don't work, i.e. Windows Update. I have multiple restore points from before and after I installed some MS updates and If I restore back to any of these the laptop will start up once or twice but will then start failing to load again for no reason. No programs or updates are being installed after the restores though. I have disabled Vista and Windows Defender updates. I have been creating the boot logging file and when windows doesn't boot it gets to "loaded xaudio.sys" (for conexant modem). Then if I do a restore back to a working point the ntbtlog.txt file has this plus another line "loaded cdfs.sys". Thats the only difference. I've had a look at the former is signed properly and the later is a MS file and also certified. Does anyone have a clue what the hell is going on? PS: Extra info - The only other programs I installed were Commodo 3 Alpha firewall (now removed as it wouldnt let MS updates install at all). Spybot 1.4 disabled and removed and has no effect. Nod32 AV disabled etc and has no effect. Everything else is std with the laptop. |

1. Vista System File Checker: Click Start » All Programs » Accessories. Right click Command Prompt. Select Run as Administrator. At the command prompt type sfc /scannow (dont miss the space before the /) Click OK. You may need your Vista DVD if prompted for SFC. 2. Check Disk Start > All Programs > Acccessories Right click command Prompt. Select "Run as Administrator". At the command prompt type chkdsk /f (there's a space before the /) Press Enter. 3. Vista repair options don't include XP's Repair Installation. However it may be worth doing some startup maintenance: Windows Vista Enterprise - Repair StartUp |
