Default Vista Boot Time Issue

There have been reports on various forums and blog entries on the web of a problem with Windows Vista and ThinkPads. (One example) They are true. Here is what happened, and here is how we are going to fix it:
During our testing of Vista on ThinkPad offerings, we learned it may take the operating system approximately an additional 10 seconds to boot vs. a similar WinXP configuration. This problem only occurred on ThinkPad systems with an Ultrabay (our brand name for a swappable modular bay) when hot swapping optical and hard drives.
Initially, the Vista beta code had a problem on hotswap drives. They were not recognized when they were inserted into the system. This happened because an optical drive takes a few seconds to be ready at power up, and the Vista drive recognition logic could not handle the device insertion in time.
The Microsoft team fixed the problem by adding a 10 second wait for optical drive insertion, but the change also affected cold boot time — the system simply waits 10 seconds. We noticed this problem after Vista release to manufacturing and opened a service request with Microsoft to fix the problem.
Lenovo and Microsoft have defined a fix which fixes this problem and eliminates the extra time needed for the drive to be recognized.
Plans to fix this issue will be addressed in following manner:
1) We will refresh our system preload images shipped by Lenovo starting next month.
2) Our ThinkVantage system update as well as our system support site will provide and deliver this fix to ThinkPad users when it is available.
So for ThinkPad systems shipped prior to March (which will not have the updated driver in the preload), we recommend customers download the software update to update your system after Vista has been installed.
This update is not required for Lenovo 3000 notebooks as they currently don't ship with Ultrabay drives.
