Default Can't update Windows XP

I'm working on a computer that had Windows XP Home. Tried to install NAV but got message that user was not authorized to access a folder. User is Administrator but I made sure user was authorized to access all folders.

This didn't work so I decided to upgrade to XP Pro hoping this would provide a properly working copy of windows. I then went to upgrade windows. I found that the services Automatic Updates was disabled as well as Background Intelligent Trans...

I made Automatic Updates Automatic and started the service. I made Background Intelligent Trans manual and started the service.

I then ran Windows update. And got
Updates were unable to be successfully installed.
The following updates were not installed:
Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773)

I've been working with XP for a long time and never seen this before. STRANGE

This is the original XP version, prior to SP2.

OOsorio,

I have seen a similar issue that was linked to Norton's uninstall deleting a registry entry that is needed by BITS. Look in the registry key below ...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l
\BackupRestore

Do you have a key (i.e. folder) named FilesNotToBackup? If not try creating it and then see if that fixes the problem.

Remember to always have a backup before editing the registry. The change you are making should not cause a problem but accidents can happen. Let me know if you have any questions or need more information.
