My system boots nomally, but when I enter my password and log in, it immediaely hangs. The cursor still moves but the "OK" button remains depressed and the cursor becomes hidden when you move it over the login window. Booting to Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Command Prompt works fine, but booting to Safe Mode with Networking hangs like booting normally hangs. So it must be network related, no? Does anyone know exactly what is different between Safe Mode and Safe Mode w/ Networking? When booted into Safe Mode, I disabled any non-MS services, all startup items, and about a dozen services that seem to relate to networking (Wireless Zero, DNS Client, and others). Still, Safe Mode w/ Networknig and a normal boot hang on the login. It may be helpful to know that recently, before this started, all of my applications would crash upon login (literally - there would be 20-30 Error Reporting boxes that pop up, and Docor Watson dialogue boxes). To fix this, I tried a System Restore to a routine checkpoint few days ago. Rather than fixing that problem, the restore caused the login hanging problem. I have unplugged all extra hardware, I have always had up to date anti virus, etc. I work at an IT desk, so it's particularly frustrating! |

To diagnose, start with the minimum : mobo + cpu + 1 ram stick, video card, 1 harddisk, keyboard and mouse. if it still hangs, it is one of the connected devices; test them on a working pc, or swap them out. If all ok, add devices 1 by one till the bad one is found. It can be a driver problem too; good candidates are the video, sound and lan drivers; update them, or reinstall them. |
