Lsass.exe - System Error : After installing memory

Question: Installed 1GB memory in an IBM Thinkpad in the main memory slot under the keyboard (not the one on the outside of the case). It originally had no card.
After booting a few times sucessfully, I now receive the error:

Lsass.exe - System Error
An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably. The Registry could not read in, or write out, or flush one of the files that contains the system's image of the Registry.

This error happens at the same time as the Windows login. I can't get past it without it restarting itself. Safe mode doesn't work either. Is there a way I can get my computer to load without re-installing the OS?

My basic recommendation on data recovery is to stop ALL activity on the problem computer.
Remove the HDD and either 'Slave' it off another computer or buy a USB "Enclosure" that will allow you to plug the HDD into it, then connect to a good computer via a USB port.

You can get an IDE connector for a notebook HDD to connect to a desktop IDE cable, or a 2 1/2 inch USB Enclosure.
