256 MB of RAM and 160 GB and xpsp2 is simply just not enough to run a good peforming computer. you have a couple of options here SATA hard drive, do you have the correct drivers for this hdd? Do you know the brand name of this hdd and we'll find the manufacture diagnostic test for this hdd. Look at this list of sata diagnostics and see if your hd is listed. Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp. Is there only one partition? In control panel administrative tools computer management disc manager have a look at the hdd. Check in control panel administrative tools event viewer for any errors. while in windows go to start>open run type in cmd pres enter then type in chkdsk only no perimeters this will run a read only chkdsk, it should report any problems. IUn my computer r/click C drive properties tools defrag and analyze it. You may noit be able defrag it until you chkdsk completes. Can you run a chkdsk from safemode and also recovery. Tap the F8 key to access safemode on a HP To access recovery you have change the boot order to cdrom first insert your xpsp2 full setup disc not a sp2 upgarde cd Then reboot press any key to start setup then choose R for recovery in recovery highlight yoru C drive in teh CMD prompt type in chkdsk /r press enter let it run as long it needs till it ends by itself. Once it completes take out the xpcd type in exit press enter Press DEL to access the bios and change the boot order back to hdo first then cdrom. save and exit F10. reboots and hopefully it now loads okay. Run a disc cleanup etc. Then defrag. |
