Canceling a copy / paste corrupted my files

I was transferring 45 gigs from an internal hard drive to an external hard drive. About half way through the process I canceled the file transfer because I needed the computers resources. When I went back to the original data in the internal hard drive the data was all scrambled up. There are some folders and files that were originally there but the content inside is messed up and missing. For some reason a lot of the files names have a "~" in them. When I looked at the properties of the folder it registered 45 gigs of data so it is there - right? Is there any hope of retrieving this data?

Were you moving it? or copying it?

If you were moving it, the files are deleted as soon as it is copied to the new location. Are the missing files on your external drive?

Files that start with ~ are usually temporary files created from office applications or database problems. Check the date time stamp and see if they are recent or spread over time.
