Slow accessing files on SBS 2003

Question: Windows SBS 2003 with xp and 2000 clients.

I have a client who has an xp laptop and is logging in at the office to his sbs 2003 server. It seems to be getting slow with accessing the files.

Is there a way that I troubleshoot the slowness to find out what might be causing it. The server is running at a fine speed and I even logged in with a vpn and it seemed to be relatively fine.

It may be the way his computer is logging into the server.

Is he logging into the network ocally, or through VPN first? Like a prelogon connect?
