I noticed something weird. I have a couple desktops - a dimension 2300 and a dimension 4500 that I a want to set up as a 'lab'. I used the same dell xp pro sp2 CD that I borrowed from a friend (the cds I have for these machines are pre sp1! - wanted to save some time applying updates).

I've done clean reinstalls loads of times before - choose install xp, clean install, delete the existing partition, fast ntfs format, etc....

I never thought about it but they all? reboot at some point to the swirling question mark in the bottom right and that mellow music and ask questions - do you want to register, user names, etc.... what's weird / got me wondering is that 1 of the 2 machines (2300), didn't ask the questions... it is running (in normal mode) logged in as administrator. when setting these up, I chose the same settings (except for machine name). both are in workgroups, both in the same time zone, etc....

anyone know how I got the 1 machine to boot up into administrator username under NORMAL mode?

I have seen that when I left the nstallation for a while and apparently did not respond to the screen where you create users . . apparently, if you do not respond after a certain time, it continues the install with the default user.

You should be able to create another user to get back to where you want to be,
