Default the system cannot log you on now because the domain <username> is not available

Question: I have an older machine running windows XP which doesn't present a log on screen for a user just takes you right into windows. I recently bought a new computer I run linux on and wanted to turn my XP machine into a virtual machine. So I did just that and ported over the image to my new machine. The problem is when I go to run it with VMWare it gives me a logon prompt for my username, which it never did on the physical machine. This computers old to the point if I even had a password (which apparently I did because in won't log me on without one) then I definitely don't remember it. My question is since I still have the physical machine and can log onto that as the root user is there any way to retrieve my password.

I'm assuming the software I used to create the image added the logon prompt "feature" for security reasons so you can't use there software to quickly steal peoples entire working machines. So if I can't retrieve the password is there any way I could reset it to something so when I recreate the image I'll know the password.

Then I'd say
1) Install the recovery console (How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP)

2) Boot into recovery console

3) change to c:\windows\system32\config

4) rename "Sam" to "Sam.old"

5) Reboot
