Default Press DEL to enter setup

Question: During start up PC freezes with IBM logo on the screen and "pressDEL to enter setup" in bottom LH corner.
No keyboard keystroke or combination have any effect. O/S is WindowsXP and had worked perfectly until mains power was interrupted one day while PC was active. Have read some previous solutions but not exactly same situation. Have removed power cable for 30 mins and held various keys during powerup but no luck.

When you connected the PS/2 keyboard I'm assuming the USB one was disconnected.
Try a PS/2 and just hit the Del key and keep hitting it.
If your pausing on post BIOS then it's trying to resolve what to boot off.
With the PS/2 keyboard when it gets to this stage does the caps lock light on the keyboard work?
(Like if you hit caps lock does the light on the keyboard light up)
Do you hear any "ticking" coming from inside the case?

Also for now I'd unplug ANY external devices baring mouse, keyboard and screen from the computer.
Lets see if we can at least get it to get past this.

I'm having identical problem (with the only difference of the logo). Pls! somebody let me know if anything works in this situation. I'm considering reseting the MB by means of removing CMOS battery; hesitating as not sure whether I'll be able to retrieve the CMOS information (BIOS won't boot). Any way around that? Many thanks.
