Default Unable to access files after moving hard drive to new machine

I had an old pc running XP professional and it died (power supply). I needed to get some of the files off of the old hard drive, so I put the hard drive into an external drive bay and plugged it into the Firewire port and it becomes drive J on my new PC that is running XP media.

The problem that I am having is that I can not access J:\Documents and Settings\joseph\My Documents - iI get a cannot access file error and I do not know where to look to correct this. All other directories are accessible, even other directories under the documents and settings.

If you are feeling frisky and have an understanding of linux you could try and use Knoppix.

Knoppix is a bootable version of linux that has a cool looking desktop. You download the ISO, burn it to disk, then you boot to that disk and ensure that the drives are plugged in. Then it should appear (sda1 or something like that). Then you should be able to see all the file in the directory you are having a problem with.

Extracting the data can be a little tricky, you can't just copy it to the new hard disk (linux can't really write to a windows drive - but it can read from it) You can however put a PEN DRIVE in and copy to that.

Not the easiest answer but it is the way I tend to do it if Windows is playing up.

If you want to know more look for data recover with knoppix in google.
