Default Trouble setting Folder Permissions

Question: Although I have quite a bit of experience with Windows XP, I've never used it on a domain nor have I used the Permissions feature to limit access to files and folders. So, while there may be some obvious reason to you why I can't do what I'm trying to do, at the moment it's a complete mystery to me :-)

Basically, I'd like to set Permissions on some folders on an XP Pro machine that connects to both Pro and Home machines, to allow only some users access to those folders.

When I go to the Sharing tab of the folder I want to setup, I choose "Share this folder" and then I click on Permissions. On the Security tab, I click on "Add".

This is the part that I don't understand.

In my mind, I want to click on "Locations", find the computer on the network, then add the user of that computer to the list that allows access to the folder. However, when I click "Locations", the only computer listed is the one I'm on.

What am I doing wrong and how can I achieve what I'm after.

Default Re: Trouble setting Folder Permissions

since this is not a domain, you will need to set up local accounts for the users that you want to be able to share the folder. then, in the sharing & security->sharing tab, go to the permissions button. add the local users there. i find it easiest to click the Advanced button, and then select the Object Types button. select only users (unselect the other options). Then click Find Now and add the users.

when the users go to access the share, they will need to use the username & password of the account you set up for them.
