Default double click doesn't work

I have a client who has a strange problem. double clicking on desktop icons results in no action. right clicking works fine. and single clicking on options or buttons works fine. but single clicking has a unique problem as well. I'll have to give you examples because describing this is difficult. In IE if I go to google search and type a search topic and hit enter, the single click on a suggested choice, I'm taken back to the page where I entered the search topic with the topic listed. It goes back a page. it does this in many but not all IE pages.

If I open a windows explorer window and say go to my documents and open my pictures and open a folder with pictures, and I click on a picture, instead of high lighting that picture, I'm taken back to the prior screen before I opened folder.

The client has change mice, move from ps2 mice to usb mice. We tried wiindows restore to a point prior to problem starting. We tried repair reinstall of windows xp. We removed and reinstalled mouse driver.

If I connect to her computer over the internet say with logmein, the problem doesn't exist.

solution
You may have to download the actual SP2 executable file (huge 200+ MB) to your hard drive and execute it from there.
We've had several computers that would not run the full install over the Internet.

"double click doesn't work." The fix.
I cleaned all the spyware, reinstalled the mouse drivers, nothing would fix it.
If I log on as another user doubleclicking works. The only fix that I found that would work is to create another user.

Then I decided to edit the mouse registry settings. Using regedit I simply noted all the mouse settings for a user that worked. Then edited the registry of the user that had the problem and and made all the settings match.
My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse.

ouila - it works!
BTW - regedit can be dangerous. Backup your registry before making any changes.

Firefox users can add features and change functionality in Firefox by installing extensions. Extension functionality is varied; such as those enabling mouse gestures, those that block advertisements, and those that enhance tabbed browsing.
