was functioning ok except for considerable slowdown of the system just recently. no virus/trojans etc. found, however, I suspected that hp toolbox may have been causing the decrease in performance (javaw.exe) and not being able to uninstall it due to not having the original cd handy, I unchecked the relevant hp items in the startup list (msconfig) and rebooted the pc (all this being done remotely via pcanywhere) I found that I could not reconnect and had to go onsite to see what the problem was. The pc now runs full scandisk on bootup and will not get past this point. A restart simply starts scandisk again. I have since run the original xp cd to do a repair install.. which goes through the process normally, and when the system reboots, it goes back into scandisk again with the same problem. My next step will be to try to recover from a possible corrupt registry, however there may be someone in EE that can suggest a simpler method to resolve this issue before I attempt this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. soln sounds like maybe one of the partitions is in trouble. using the manufacture diagnostic disc check the hdd. Slaving it maybe in order so that you can save off the files. If the hdd is in trouble. HP has a recovery partition that you can use.
