Requirements
Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or 2

Author/Supplier

File Name

Description
You should download this patch immediately - see below for Microsoft's official view. The patch fixes a problem where a visit to the Official Microsoft Windows update site causes the appearance of error code 0x80070002. You may get stuck in a loop that every time you try to update, Windows keeps saying the same error code 0x80070002 - thus leaving your system vulnerable. Thankfully, this download will break you out of the frustrating loop. It is also another reason that we don't like automated update sites that take control of your system and install what they like. Quite simply, they are imperfect and can cause critical errors that make it impossible to get new downloads - Symantec has experienced the same issues with Live Update and Creative faced crashes with one of their automated update systems.

At the heart of the problem in this case is the Windows Filter Manager. Poor thing, it gets a bit confused and may return a value of STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND instead of STATUS_OBJECT_PATH_NOT_FOUND. Then bingo, the system crashes with the error code 0x80070002. Important notes: sometimes other software that uses the Windows Filter Manager may also crash with the same error code message. There are different patches for Windows XP and Windows 2000.

From Microsoft 'We recommend that you install this update even if you do not have any minifilters installed. This is because we expect increased adoption of minifilter technology when Microsoft Windows Vista releases. If you install the update now, you will not be affected by this problem even if you install a minifilter-based product in the future.'
