Default Interrupted System Repair

Question: This problem started when I removed an external ATA drive without turning off the computer; it froze and when I restarted I got a Windows Product Activation error. This is a fully legal, OEM (Dell) copy of Windows XP Pro.

I started up from the reinstallation CD; chose Install/F8/Repair. The computer got turned off before the repair was done and now I can't get it to boot on its own or to complete the repair from the CD. I know that all my files are still there because I was able to get into a DOS mode from the recovery CD and check out the directory of the C drive. Luckily in between I was able to start up in Safe Mode and backup. But I'm still reluctant to do a clean install and start from scratch just in case I missed anything in the backup.

I have had two suggestions; 1. Install a second copy of XP on the same drive in a "Windows 2" directory (I'm not even sure this is possible) then delete the original, or 2., buy a new hard drive, install XP and configure the existing hard drive as an additional drive (eg, Drive F). The first alternative sounds like it would be easier but I'm afraid that everything might be erased by choosing a clean install and there might not be an opportunity to create a new directory for the 2nd copy.

You may have damaged more than you bargained for, discharges can damage the mainboard.
I would go this way>> buy a new hard drive, install XP and configure the existing hard drive as an additional drive (eg, Drive F)

as a slaved hdd all your files/ programfiles/emails are still okay, apart from some windows system files, you can delete them.
Create a shortcut to any play.exe fom ga,es and they shoudl run fine stick them on your desktop they should work okay.
Open outlook express and import all your emails from the store directlory.
Use search to find them on the F drive first search for .dbx
The store folder is normally in C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities but in your case it woudl be F, you'll need to unhide and show system files from tools folders options view.
I woudl suggest you always keep and save your files to the slave never on a windows drive for this reason.

Remember to touch the outercase always before touching anything inside. Donot stand on carpet , Discharges can destroy the computer as we have electricity in our bodies.
Try putting your arm near a tv screen.
