Default ‘Display Adapters’ is missing from Device Manager

Question: Problem:

After completing the ‘repair’ function in win xp sp1 the ‘Display Adapters’ icon is missing from the system Device Manger list.

The drivers for the video card (Geforce FX 5200) are in the correct system folders.

Since I can’t find the video card from Display Adapters I’ve looked at ‘properties’ from the desktop / settings / adapter the Adapter Information screen reads <unavailable> for all categories and the Adapter Type properties screen in General reads VgaSave (as file type) Device Type: Non-Plug and Play drivers, the other elements are ‘Unknown’ and that it is working properly.

The card is an AGP card – and I’ve confirmed the system bios is set to read AGP first.

I’ve verified the drivers for this card have been removed from Add / Remove Programs.

When attempting to install the drivers from the installation CD the program stops as it “Cannot find display adapter”.

What should I do?

Also, I realize this is a different subject, but, where do I learn about ‘points’ to award for services?

Have you tried running sfc /scannow from a run line? Let that complete, restart the computer and see if the category is back.
