Red Hat Inc has announced that its Enterprise Linux operating system has been selected by Nokia Corp's Networks Business as its primary operating system for carrier-grade platforms.
The two organizations will also work together on carrier-grade telecommunications products, while Raleigh, North Carolina-based Red Hat will provide Nokia with consulting, support, certification and training services as part of the deal.
Nokia's Networks Group is in the process of being merged with Siemens AG's carrier-related operations to form Nokia Siemens Networks. Representatives from Nokia could not be reached to confirm if the deal with Red Hat would transfer to the new organization.
Last month Red Hat declared telecommunications to be one of its key target markets as it joined a European Commission project to create telecommunication service delivery platform standards.
"All these next generation delivery services are driving infrastructure build-out and they see the advantage of open source," said Tim Yeaton, senior VP of worldwide marketing and general manager of Red Hat's product division.
Earlier this month it announced that 29 strategic telecommunications independent software vendors had become part of the company's telecommunications partner program in the last six months.
