A major point of distinction between the growth of the Firefox web browsing software application and the growth of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and other such web browsing software applications is that the growth of the Firefox web browser has been a lot more organic and inclusive in nature. The new features introduced in the latest version of the Firefox web browser are logical consequences of the features in the earlier versions. In case of other web browsers, this is not the case.
The Firefox web browsing software application introduced the tabbed browsing feature in a big manner. It is not that the Firefox web browsing software application was the first web browser to introduce the tabbed browsing feature. However, the Firefox web browsing software application was the first web browser to become so popular despite competing against Internet Explorer. The success and popularity of the Firefox web browsing software application brought in tabbed browsing feature into the limelight. Till then, the tabbed browsing feature was considered as a feature that was suitable for niche users of the web browsing software application. People were convinced that the Microsoft Internet Explorer was the best web browsing software application and were of the opinion that any other web browsing software application was not suitable for the average end user until the Firefox web browsing software application came along and changed all that. It revolutionized the web browser market by proving that other web browsing software applications can be as good as Microsoft’s Internet Explorer if not better.
Once the Firefox web browsing software application became successful, the focus shifted on the tabbed browsing feature. More and more end users began to wonder why the tabbed browsing feature was not present in their web browser as well. More and more end users switched over to Mozilla Firefox to make use of the advantages offered by the tabbed browsing feature. Once this happened, the end users started facing new problems caused by the presence of the tabbed browsing feature. The tabbed browsing feature enabled the end user to log onto and work on multiple websites at the same point of time. However, a sudden shut down in the web browser implied that all the unsaved work would be lost. For some strange reason, people were more upset with the Firefox web browser for not providing a safeguard against the same. It was almost as if end users were disappointed that the Firefox web browser had slipped up on this point. That Internet Explorer too had slipped up on this point did not perturb the end users. Perhaps they were used to mediocrity from other web browsers. To counter the criticism, the Firefox web browsing software applications end users were offered the Tab Mix Plus Firefox extension that incorporated the session restore feature. This Firefox extension solved the problem of data loss due to system crash forever. In the event of a system crash, the end user would have the option of recovering all the information and data that was lost. If the end user was working on ten tabs at the time of sudden shut down, the end user would be asked whether he or she desires to recover the tabs.
After the introduction of the tabbed browsing feature, the problem of data loss became acute. To over come this, the logical step ahead was the session restore feature. Today the session restore feature is an integral part of the
Firefox web browser. It would have been possible for an end user of the Firefox web browser to predict the introduction of the session restore feature even as version 1.0 was released. On the other hand, the growth of other web browsers has been very haphazard.
