Default Change File Type Association in Windows XP

Have you ever had a an application change the association of a file type? This tutorial will walk you through the steps of changing the application associated with a specific file type. For this tutorial, we will change the file association of an MP3 file from Windows Media Player to iTunes.

First, find a file on your computer of the specific type. After you have found the file, right click on the file and select Open With - Choose Program from the popup menu.

In the Open With dialog box, select the application that you want to associate with the application. For our example, we will select iTunes. If the application is not listed, you can browse for the application by clicking on the Browse button.

In this dialog box, you will also want to click the the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" check box. This will make the selected application the default for this file type.

The file will now be associated with the selected application. You will also notice that the file's icon will change to show the association with the new application.

You can also perform these same steps to assign an application to a file type that does not have an application associated to
