Default Dial up and start Mozilla in one click

Set up a desktop icon under KDE that will both make your modem dial into the Internet and also start Mozilla, all with a single click.

You can easily set up a desktop icon that will make your modem dial into the Internet and also start Mozilla. To do so, you must first create an "Autodial" kppp account to run Mozilla, and then create a desktop icon that will use it.

Please note that this How-To assumes you can already get your modem to connect to the Internet, and that you can then run Mozilla successfully.

First, to create an "Autodial" kppp account:
  1. Open the KPPP window
  2. In the KPPP window, click on the Setup button, click on the account you normally use to connect to the Internet, and then click on the Copy button
  3. Click on the new account (which should have a name ending in "_copy") and click on the Edit... button to open the Edit Account window
  4. Change the Connection Name to Autodial
  5. Click on the Execute tab, and in the Upon connect: field put /usr/bin/mozilla
  6. Finally, close the KPPP window
Second, to create a desktop icon that will run the "Autodial" account:
  1. Right-click (click your right mouse button, not the left button) on the desktop, which will open the desktop menu
  2. Select Create New, Link to application... to open the Properties for Program.desktop window
  3. Change the link's name from "Link to application" to Mozilla Autodial (or whatever name is most meaningful to you)
  4. (Optional -- if you want to change the desktop icon to something other than the gear icon) Click on the gear icon, and then click on the icon you want to use for the new link (I chose the Mozilla icon, rl_mozilla)
  5. Click on the Execute tab, and in the Command: field type /opt/kde2/bin/kppp -c Autodial
  6. Close the Properties for Program.desktop window
Please note that, just as before, after you close Mozilla you will still have to click on the Autodial icon on the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen, and then click the Disconnect button, to make the modem hang up.
